II’m a wife, mama to 2 little girls and 2 pups, and Huntsville family photographer. Little ones grow up so fast and being able to capture those memories for a lifetime is what I love most. I love to be able to tell families stories by capturing the couple, little ones, whole family, or seniors at graduation.
Choosing the perfect outfit for your family photos can feel overwhelming. As a Madison AL photographer when it comes to planning outfits first I recommend my clients to consider the weather. You want to be comfortable during your session, so certainly consider how warm or cold it will be outside. The biggest advice I have for outfits is to coordinate but don’t match. I explain that some more down below. Whether you are having your family photos in Madison AL or surrounding areas such as Big Springs Park, Hays Preserve, or Belvins Gap these tips will help you to plan the perfect outfits.
As a Madison AL photographer, my biggest tip that I communicate with clients for planning outfits is to coordinate but don’t match. The only exception to this is if you are specifically wanting photos with everyone in the same outfit. For example, the classic white tee and jeans family photos. For all other sessions I recommend starting to coordinate outfits by selecting a color scheme that includes 2-3 colors. Some great ways to coordinate without matching are to include subtle patterns, select outfits that add some texture, and consider different shades of the color. The photos below offer some great examples of family photos that include coordinated outfits without fully matching.
Next, when selecting the perfect outfits for family photos in Madison AL you’ll want to consider the season and location. The temperatures in Madison AL can vary greatly between summer and winter. You want everyone to be comfortable during your family photos. This helps to capture natural moments and genuine smiles. If it is cold be sure to bring jackets. Jackets can always be removed quickly before some photos if you don’t want them in your pictures. Also, if you are planning to wear heels consider bringing sandals with you as some locations will include a little walking to shoot in a few spots.
When considering your color scheme keep in mind where your session will take place. I caution clients towards wearing a bunch of green for a session that will take place in a grassy field or with a lot of trees. There will still be contrast between everything, but the photos will include a lot of green. If your session is taking place somewhere like Downtown Huntsville with light, bright, neutral buildings use caution with wearing white if you want there to be contrast between the background and the outfits.

When selecting your color scheme and picking outfits I recommend choosing timeless options. Some great timeless color options include neutrals such as tans, creams, black, brown, and grey. For some color options: blues, light pinks, pastel purple, and a soft green all photograph beautifully. Selecting subtle patterns for your family photos will also help to keep your photos timeless for generations to come.
Lastly, I highly recommend planning your outfits in advance of your session. I’m always happy to help my clients with any questions you may have regarding outfits. Planning ahead helps to ensure you like all the outfits together and avoids feeling stressed the day of the session. Getting ready for family photos with children can feel overwhelming to get everyone ready and out the door on time. Planning your outfits in advance for your family photos can take a big weight off your shoulders the day of. If you are interested in booking with a Madison AL photographer I’d love to chat!
