This family booked one of my spring mini sessions spots at Hays Preserve. The mini sessions took place at the end of May and updated family photos were this sweet mom’s Mother’s Day gift. The mini session was the perfect opportunity for this family to get a few updated family photos with a quick 15 minute session. This family photo session at Hays Preserve turned out perfectly despite the weather predicting rain all week.
Hays Preserve is one of my favorite locations for family sessions and a great spot for mini sessions. It offers lots of trees, wide open fields, and a nice trail. I love the open fields at Hays Preserve for family sessions with young children because they are away from busy roads and allow children some freedom to move around throughout the session. This location also tends to be pretty quite without too many people around. Occasionally you will see some other photographers capturing sessions there or bikers passing through on the trail, but otherwise it tends to be a pretty quiet location.
Leading up to the day of the mini sessions the weather was predicting rain and storms. Thankfully, the storms passed through the night before and everything was dry and perfect for the mini sessions. The day was very sunny without a cloud in the sky. I guided the family through prompts to create timeless family portraits. For this sessions and most of my family sessions I start with photos of the family together, then mom and kids, dad and kids, just kids together, kids individually, then just mom and dad together. Whether you book a full session or mini session this is the flow I typically follow, but it is adjusted as needed. It allows me to capture all the images while starting with the photos with the kids first.
This sweet family was very happy with their mini session experience and the images they received. They shared this about their experience: “I found Kelsea through a social media post offering mini sessions. We were new to the area and needed some updated family pictures. She was wonderful throughout the session guiding us but then also allowing us to make our own requests. She took pictures in several locations and with different combinations of family members. Her turn around time for photos was incredible and the pictures turned out so beautiful. I would definitely recommend her and will be using her again.”
Hays Preserve is a great location for family photos in Huntsville. It offers a lot of greenery with the open fields and trees all around. The weather does have to be considered with Hays Preserve though as it tends to flood with a lot of rain, so even if it rained recently we will have to make sure the conditions are still suitable for the day of. Overall though Hays Preserve is a great location for capturing family portraits. I especially love the open fields for families with young children. The fields are away from busy roads, so it allows children to have some freedom throughout the session.
