Prepping for the Senior Session: Behind-the-Scenes Planning

From the moment the senior session is booked I like to make sure there is plenty of communication between myself in the client. This helps to ensure that all of us are well prepared. Once the session is booked I check that contracts are signed, questionnaires are completed, and I have answered any questions seniors may have. Before the senior portrait session, I provide any details needed regarding the location for our session to the client.

Next, I check and prepare my gear. I check to make sure my camera body and lenses are all packed and ready for the session. Then I charge up any batteries and double check that my SD cards are all packed. I also check my backup gear is ready if needed as well. All of that is prepped in my camera bag before the session. Lastly, I pack a cross body bag for easy access to extra SD cards during the session.

Arriving at the Shoot Location

One of my favorite things about being a Huntsville senior photographer is the variety of options for session locations. My favorite spot for senior photos is probably Downtown Huntsville. It offers some great spots with neutral backgrounds, Big Springs Park, and an urban feel. Downtown Huntsville is one of the best locations for getting a variety of backdrops into your senior portrait gallery.

Regardless of where your session takes place I always arrive to my shoot locations early. Once I arrive I make sure there’s nothing that will cause us to need to change up locations. Some example are events, closures, etc. Then I begin to look at the sunlight and see what spots will have the best light for capturing incredible photos.

During the Huntsville Senior Session: Capturing the Magic

During the senior session I will guide the senior through prompts and poses to capture a variety of portraits. We will also move around to different locations to add some variety to the images. I strive to create natural moments that capture the senior’s personality authentically. Planning outfits in advance and bringing along props such as sports gear is also a great way to capture authentic senior portraits.

Editing and Delivering the Senior Portraits

After the senior photography session I download and back up the images off my SD cards. Then, over the next few weeks I will cull and edit the senior portraits. I guarantee the senior gallery will be delivered within 30 days of the session, but I always strive for it to be earlier. Once the senior portraits are ready they are uploaded to my gallery system. The client will receive an email with a link to the gallery with their final portraits. The gallery will allow you to download the images, which can then be shared on social media and printed anywhere you’d like.
