Deciding on hair and makeup for a photography session can be very dependent on the location of the photos. The majority of sessions at Kelsea Adams Photography take place outdoors in Huntsville, AL. When preparing hair and makeup for an outdoor photography session considering the heat and humidity can be important. Below are some hair and makeup tips that I hope you will find helpful when planning for your session.
My number one hair tip when planning an outdoor photography session is to consider the location. For sessions I tell my clients to consider the heat, humidity and wind. Everyone’s hair is different, so consider how your hair does in the humidity when deciding how to style your hair. If your session is taking place on a windy day consider how you feel about your hair being blown around in photos. This can be super fun, but some people also aren’t going for that look. For humid summers, I recommend considering using a humidity shield spray and/or hairspray for the day of. These products can make a huge difference in helping your hair with the humidity.
Whether you decide to have your hair down, half up and half down, or styled in an up-do is all completely up to you and your preference. If you are wanting your photos to have a soft, dreamy look I recommend considering that in your hair, makeup, and outfit choices. For soft photos, consider a hairstyle that either has your hair all down or some soft pieces around the face. For light and airy style photos that feel soft I like to think of soft hairstyles, natural looking makeup, and light colored outfits. If you are looking for a more sharp, elegant look to your photos consider a hairstyle that is more sleek. Some great options are your hair down and tucked behind the ears, a slicked back bun, or ponytail.
If you are doing your own makeup for an outdoor photography session you might feel a little pressure to do your makeup perfectly. I recommend doing makeup similar to your typical makeup look. Doing your usual makeup routine will help to make you look like yourself in your final images. Of course, you may choose to do a little bit more then your quick 5 minute routine, but generally I would stick to a typical makeup look for yourself. I recommend using a primer and setting spray especially if your session is taking place in the summer. Try to make sure any makeup is blended well and there are no harsh lines around your jawline. You may want to consider blending your makeup down your neck to avoid any harsh lines.
